Concrete Patios, Walkways and Steps in Bear, Delaware

Concrete that drains right, cracks where it should, and holds up to winter.

Concrete that holds up to Delaware winters

Concrete fails here for the same reasons every time. The base was not compacted, there was no room for drainage, or water got into the surface and froze. A few winters later you have cracks, heaved slabs and flaking.

We dig out, lay and compact a stone base, set forms with a slope so water runs away from the house, and cut control joints so the concrete cracks where we want it to instead of where it wants to.

What we do

Patios

Broom finish or smooth, sized for a table, a grill or the whole family.

Walkways and sidewalks

Front walks and paths around the house, sloped so water runs off.

Steps and landings

New steps at the front door or off the deck, with the right rise and run.

Driveways and aprons

New driveways, aprons and parking pads, poured on a compacted stone base and sloped so water runs off.

Shed pads and slabs

Level pads for sheds, hot tubs and equipment.

Retaining wall resurfacing

Old block and brick walls that are stained and crumbling can often be resurfaced instead of torn down.

Freeze, thaw and salt

Water

Concrete soaks up water. When it freezes, it expands and breaks the surface apart a little more each time.

Salt

Rock salt and ice melt speed up the flaking. Sealing helps keep salt and water out.

Ground movement

Without a compacted base, the ground settles or heaves under the slab and it cracks across the middle.

How a concrete job goes

  1. Layout and price

We measure, mark the shape and slope, and give you a written price.

  2. Dig and base

We dig out, lay stone, and compact it.

  3. Forms and pour

Forms go in with the right slope, then we pour and finish.

  4. Cure

We tell you when you can walk on it and when it is safe for anything heavy.

How we pour it

Exterior concrete needs to be the right mix for freeze and thaw, poured on a compacted base, finished properly and sealed. Control joints keep cracks small and straight.

Most of our patios and walks get a broom finish, which gives good grip when it is wet. A smooth finish is an option for covered areas.

We stand behind it

We stand behind our work. If something we installed is not right, call us and we will come back and make it right.

Concrete questions

How soon can I walk on new concrete?

Foot traffic is usually fine after a day or two. Cars and anything heavy need about a week. We give you the timeline for your job.

Will my new concrete crack?

Almost all concrete cracks a little. Control joints and a good base keep the cracks small and in straight lines where you expect them.

Should I seal it?

Yes. Sealing helps keep water and salt out. We will tell you when it is ready.

Can you fix my old retaining wall?

If the wall is solid and not leaning, resurfacing can make it look new and protect it. If it is leaning or bulging, it needs to be rebuilt.
